Reasons to Buy

We like strategic infrastructure assets, and tank farms are important in today’s world of high energy production and storage. The surplus of US oil and gas production is a relatively new thing; logistics assets are having to handle flows in many different directions (import, export, etc.), which has increased the demand for flexible storage solutions. When oil prices go up, production goes up too, requiring more storage. When oil prices go down, it’s usually due to a demand drop or a supply surge—both of which drive an increased need for storage—in other words, in most scenarios characteristic of today’s oil markets, there is a greater need for storage.

Atlantic is one of those vital yet unsung businesses that keeps chugging along; the strong economy has helped increase the overall number of flights. Finally, MIC Hawaii qualifies as another “strategic” asset: in a good location and hard to compete with. The separation of the alternative energy business should help with management focus and strengthen the balance sheet. For investors, the well-covered dividend is the obvious attraction, and once the dust settles and it’s clear that the dividend will remain in place, the share price should return to previous levels if for no other reason than to bring the yield in line with comparable yielding assets. Finally, while we like REITs and other asset-based investment trusts, they do provide some tax challenges for after-tax accounts. Macquarie is not a REIT and trades and is taxed like an ordinary equity.
